Becoming more effective in the medical field with VR
Mahan led the Meshki's team to develop an innovative virtual reality (VR) training experience designed to help medical professionals communicate more clearly and efficiently with patients and their colleagues. With an immersive environment, individuals were able to exercise their communication skills and receive real-time data and feedback to make them more effective in their practices.
The critical and complex medical field regularly faces issues with communication that can have potentially life-threatening results. Studies have shown that miscommunication between medical providers and patients, as well as physicians and other members of the treatment team, contribute to staggering numbers of malpractice, errors, and improper care each year. As a result, hospitals and doctor’s offices are often hit with very costly fines and lawsuits, as well as increased mistrust from their patients.
The team developed a VR application designed specifically to enhance the quality of doctor-patient communication to increase levels of understanding and lower the risk of substandard treatment. With a series of pre-designed scenarios that play out in a fully immersive environment, the team was able to help train doctors and medical providers to communicate better and receive real-time feedback on their methods, allowing them to improve continuously over time. The application also simulates multiple regular procedures so that medical colleagues can communicate with each other and patients in real-world scenarios.
As physicians spent time using the VR application, the backend of the software monitored their activity. It delivered data to trainers overseeing the exercise, including graphs and charts highlighting areas for improvement and progress made from session to session. As a result, users could see specific examples in which their standard communication methods may fall short of the needs of their patients and colleagues. They, therefore, inspired them to adapt their style to deliver better care. The final work has a truly positive impact on the care patients will receive, and they look forward to rolling this out with more medical practitioners.
